Protestors stops shipment of turbines for Subansiri project in

ITANAGAR, Sep 13: Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) led by renowned RTI activist  Akhil Gogoi and students organization including All Assam Students Union has launched a series of agitations in Assam opposing shipment of turbines for the 2,000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project.

Today the protestors staged a massive protest in Tezpur after the state government allowed a Bangladeshi barge to offload seven turbines. On Saturday KMSS launched a movement against transportation of the turbines at Jogighopa in Bongaigaon. Several protestors were injured when police resorted to lathi charge when the protestors tried to prevent the movement of the barge. Despite police crackdown, protestors are undeterred.

KMSS leader has said that his organisation shall oppose any move by the NHPC and the government to transport turbines to the project site.

According to a late report, the protest has been suspended after the government official’s assurance that turbines would not be transported to the project site till issue is resolved amicably.

Assam's main opposition parties, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have also joined the protest.

Arunachal Pradesh government’s pet project being executed by the NHPC is scheduled to be commissioned in 2012. But it remains to be seen whether the project will be completed on time given the heavy protests in Assam.

Several environmental and pressure groups have already demanded that further construction of the project be scrapped citing adverse impact it was likely to have on ecology and in the downstream areas (Assam) of the project.

The state of affairs

Tongam Rina

After the death of Late Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu the state particularly the Capital Region has witnessed many incidences which have pained many of us. Some instances could have been avoided had there been some kind of proper communication channel and respect for common people. But with all those who take decision for us remaining adamant and sticking to their grounds unwilling to move ahead, there is an uneasy calm.

The recent All Nyishi Students Union sponsored bandh call on Teacher’s Day in protest against Times of India report about Nyishi community saw violence and destruction of government properties and files.  While the rest of the state celebrated Teacher’s Day, the students Union decided to show their respect and reverence for the teachers by calling a bandh in Capital region.  It is reported that main function held by the state government to honour teachers was allowed to go ahead but many schools had to postpone their celebrations. While it is for the students to ponder amongst themselves on their choice of dates for the bandh call, the action of the state government was questionable too. It provoked those in support of bandh by announcing the deployment of 2500 personnel through the media.

The government should have known that the citizens of Capital region might not respect anyone but past experiences have shown that it respect bandhs more so if it is on a Monday.  After the provocative action, the government had no idea where to look when supporters of bandh indulged in violence. There was no police deployment in vulnerable targets instead Police is being accused of using unparliamentarily words while dealing with a group of protestors.  No matter how provoked, violence in any form by either Police or protestors is condemnable and it calls for strong action.

On the other hand, Times of India issue refuses to die down even after passage of so many months. One wonders whether enough effort was put by the state government and Nyishi Elite Society to resolve the issue. War of words using the media is acceptable but atleast it was expected that apart from verbal bashing accusing the other of betrayal, a logical conclusion was drawn respecting the sentiments of the people of the state.  The standoff continues. Given the situation, it will continue for a long time unless those involved in finding a solution respect each other and keep the communication channels open. Till now, it looks more like confrontation rather than finding an amicable solution.  For the well being of the state, it is expected that at least some forward steps are taken.

One more shocking incident was the violent attack on a Law Professional Taba Tagum and his family and alleged retaliatory attack at the residence of an office bearer of Itanagar Market Welfare Association.  The Police seems confused as it yet to make any arrests in the cases and act on the FIRs lodged in police stations by both sides.

Tagum allegedly was attacked for taking up a case. One is forced to wonder whether the home ministry by not taking any action so far against his assaulters is justifying the attack on a lawyer who carried out his duties. For the record, the department is yet to act against those responsible for the attack on the IMWA office bearer’s residence as well. Have the Home department left it on to the people to settle their own scores?

On one hand we expect some actions from all concerned, one is forced to question the absence of some Congress MLAs holding important positions within the government from Itanagar for so many months and frequent trips to Delhi by those who choose to stay in Itanagar. Yours truly know that the party is fiercely defensive about its affairs but citizens who elected 42 Congress MLAs deserve to know what is exactly happening. We need to know why a section of govt offices is being run by legislators sitting in resorts in Gurgaon and why those who choose to stay in Itanagar is silent on all  issues. Perhaps we will never get an answer but it is about time we see some developmental activities in the state.

Dignity Rally declares state Govt anti-Nyishi

ITANAGAR, Sep 13: The State Government led by Jarbom Gamlin was today declared anti-Nyishi Government by the people of the community in a mass meeting held at IG Park here at the culmination of the “Nyishi Dignity Rally” organized by Nyishi Elite Society (NES) and All Nyishi Students’ Union (ANSU).

“The Government was formed out of anti-Nyishi  wave and currently it is doing anti-Nyishi works,” the meeting observed and  resolved to declare the Govt as anti-Nyishi Govt amidst thunderous support from a large number of people of the community, who braved scorching heat to join the meet.

The meeting further served 7 days ultimatum to the State Government to resolve the infamous Pradeep Thakur issue failing which the chief minister should quit.

Launching a scathing attack on Chief Minister Gamlin for undermining the sentiment of Nyishi people, NES president Bengia Tolum said that a welfare Government which can’t read the pulse of its people has no right to continue.

NES and ANSU, who have been shouldered to carry forward the movement, would decide its future strategy, if govt fails to respond its demand.

Accusing the Chief Minister of adopting ‘divide and rule policy’ on the issue, the NES president said that despite such tactics, the people of the community would continue to carry forward their movement to its logical conclusion. He also urged the ToI group to come out and help solve the problem by revealing the source of the comment which created ruckus among Nyishi people.

Earlier, the Rally was taken out from Nyirubjolli, Nirjuli which NES and ANSU said was necessitated following ‘Govt’s lackadaisical attitude’ in the resolving the issue as well as to strengthen the unity and integrity of the Nyishis in the back drop of ‘attempted onslaught’ on the oneness of the community by powerful divisive forces. It is pertinent to mention here that NES and ANSU have been exerting pressure on Government to compel ToI reporter Pradeep Thakur to reveal the source of his report and tender apology for the derogatory remark before the Nyishi people with state Government extracting a written and audio-visual apology from Thakur.

Capital witness protest against advocate attackers

ITANAGAR, Sep 13: The 12 hour bandh call issued by All Nyishi Nyijir Yapa Association evoked mixed response. The association had called bandh against government’s failure to arrest accused involve in attack of advocate Taba Tagum. While certain section of media claimed that association had withdrawn bandh, but there was no official communiqué from them in this regard.

Most of the shops in twin town of Itanagar and Naharlagun remain closed. Even some private banks were closed. The movement vehicle was also minimal. However there was no report of any untoward incidents from any part of capital complex.

On the night of 2nd September advocate Taba Tagum and his family including wife was brutally attacked leading to serious injurious to him and his younger brother. In this regard FIR has been lodged at Naharlagun police station. But till today police has not been able to make single arrest which exposes inefficiency of capital complex police.  It is to be recalled that capital police under former SP Chukhu Apa had won hearts of citizen by cracking car bomb planting case of social activist Payi Gyadi in record time. The complete failure of capital police to arrest accused involve in attack of advocate Taba Tagum has raised serious question about their integrity and efficiency.

NESO alleges violation of reservation policy, urges forest dept to come clear

ITANAGAR, Sep 13: The North East Students Organization (NESO) has urged the state forest department to come clear on the recent appointment of ACF (entry gate).

In a memorandum addressed to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF), the NESO secretary general Gumjum Haider said that department had misled the DPC meeting held on May 19 last to appoint six candidates from general category and denied the promotional avenue of APST candidates serving as Range Forest Officer.

The vacancy against which DPC meeting has been conducted occurred prior to 2009. Moreover the ACF (entry grade) was a group B post with 80 reservations for APST.

But no name of APST candidates appeared in the DPC minute,  the memorandum said.  Gumjum further maintained that the DPC has been shown a roster of 50:50 ratio in between the APST and general category candidates against the group ‘B’ post where reservation of post is 80:20 respectively.

The number of general category candidates against 20 per cent unreserved quota is limited to two candidates only, the NESO pointed out while questioning the appointment of six candidates against the quota under general category. The NESO urged the concerned department to explain and clarify its stance at the earliest in order to avoid any  future action by the organization.

Dabii inaugurates first Ice-Cream factory of the state

Naharlagun, Sep 13: This Day is very important in the history of industrial and economic development of Arunachal Pradesh as after over forty years since 1975, we are able to see a factory in the state, said Industries and Fisheries Minster and Government Spokesman Tako Dabii, while inaugurating the Lendo Ice-cream factory at Pappu Nallah, yesterday.

Terming the entire state of Arunachal Pradesh as a vegetable garden, where all kinds of vegetables are abundantly  grown wild,  Dabii said, we are lucky to be  settled in a big vegetable garden, for this we should thank god and take its full advantage. Natural resource is open for all but our people are ashamed of taping and exploring it. Outsiders has began to  take undue advantage of this, and began to collect and sell the local vegetables, sands, boulders and other forest products in the market  from whom we  have to buy back. This is a loss to the local individuals as well as loss to the state economy, he pointed out and further explained, “When everyone works, economy of every individual improves, when economy of every individual improves, the economy of state improves and when economy of  every state  improves, the economy of a country improves”.

Advising the youths to change their mindset for economic development and dignity of hard work and  engage their caliber for a constructive and dignified role in the society rather engaging themselves in bandhs and other controversial issues, he said, when you engage in self employment and  have self respect and  respect others  you will certainly be  respected.  There is no doubt in the fact that Small scale industries sustains the economy of India, it is also the highest service provider to our youths in the country.

The September 9, Investor’s meet held at Itanagar with  beeline of outside  investors in various sectors points to  huge scope in industries sector in the state. Our youths need to realize this, Dabii said and encouraged them to go for self employment in small scale industries rather than seeking for government employment which is very limited.

Informing that he has deeply gone through the workings and studied the prospects of the Departments of Industries and Fisheries, after taking over the charge, said, the scopes in both the departments are enormous, but proper policy guidelines are required and advised for a single widow mechanism in the departments.

Appreciating, Tania Doke, for venturing into the field despite being in the government job, advised him not have compromise on quality. A food adulteration is a serious case where a convict can be fined and jailed rigorously, he cautioned.  To avoid this every care should be taken that products are not adulterated, this will also ensure safety of the consumers and personal safety and longevity of the factory, he added.

The Proprietor of  the  Ice-cream factory, Tania Doke,  a teacher by profession,  who set up the  factory  at a  total investment of over 15 lakhs informed that he has set up the factory  on the suggestions of Senior leaders, well wishers and elders including , Tako Dabii, and after thorough study survey  of the market.  Though there is tough competition in the business, his quality hallmark will lead him to success, he optimistically opined. The support and cooperation of the locals, government officials and bankers will always be required for proper growth of the factory he added. The function was also attended by Director of Industries, Hage Bhat, Jt. Directors of Industries, Subu Tabin, Lekhi Phuntsu, SK Dutta, DDSE, Bigam Ngulam Lendo and others. (DIPR)

Indian vultures and its future

Diclofenac was banned for use by vets and farmers in 2006 because of its effect on vultures that feed on livestock carcasses. But researchers found the drug for sale in some form in 36 per cent of the pharmacies investigated.

In 2004 scientists identified diclofenac-poisoning as the primary cause of the declines in number of vultures.  The vultures ingested the drug when feeding on the carcasses of livestock that had been treated shortly before their death.

Diclofenac was banned in India, Nepal and Pakistan in 2006 with further restrictions on its manufacture introduced in India in 2008. But a survey has confirmed conservationists’ concerns that pharmacies are flouting the ban.

Despite advances in captive breeding, conservationists warn the birds’ future in the wild cannot be guaranteed.

Three species of vulture native to India have suffered rapid population crashes since the 1990s: the Indian vulture (Gyps indicus), slender-billed vulture (Gyps tenuirostris) and white-rumped vulture (Gyps bengalensis).

Numbers of the latter species, also known as oriental white-backed vultures, are estimated to have dropped by 99.9 per cent in the past decade. Populations of Indian and slender-billed vultures have declined by 97 per cent over the same period.

But the findings also highlighted some hope for saving the vultures from extinction.

Researchers found the vulture-safe alternative drug meloxicam available in 70 per cent of pharmacies.

Thanks for the initiative

Dear Editor,

I want to thank former Minister Roding Pertin for his initiatives for de-reservation of Dibang forest for which the people of Jemi Notko, Jia, Ithili,Iduli, Bolung, Parbuk, Kangkong, Kabang and many more villages can now live without fear of forest eviction and also can apply for PRC. Not only this,  the people of Dambuk also can have the dream of having the long felt Dibang bridge to access Roing throughout the year after 70 years of establishment of Dambuk Circle HQ.

I want to thank Jomin Tayeng present MLA , Bassu Perme former MLA, Kamin Pertin, Ex ASM Bolung, Tony Pertin Sr.Advocate, Mibom Pertin ZPM and each and every leaders who helped to achieve the goal. Really, it is a matter to rejoice but at the same time the people of all these villages should also not forget the importance of forest and environment for their next generation to come.

Yours,

Nomni Pertin,

I resent bandh calls

Dear Editor,

I would like to express deep resentment over the frequent bandh calls in our State.

We can see that our neighbouring State, Assam has been nick-named as ‘Lahey-Lahey’ due to its frequent bandh calls. If the present situation of our State goes on the same track, the day is not far when alike our neighbouring State, Assam we too might get to hear such weird names for our beautiful State.

Moreover, Frequent bandh calls are affecting and pausing the life of common masses in diverse ways.

Therefore, I highly request the people concerned to tackle their deadlock in a peaceful manner without hurting the sentiments of the fellow masses. I am in no sense to stand against any community.

Yours,

Dular Dujom

May wisdom prevail

Dear Editor,

This is in response of the Reader’s Forum of your daily published on 12th Sept’11 “We already have the Forums”.

You ask 100 Nyishi people, almost 98 will know about the NES & ANSU and who’s who of NES & ANSU.

But 99 of the Nyishis will not know, what is NWA,NCC and ANNYA. Then, my question is who has given mandate to those associations and organizations to critisize the NES & ANSU for their rightful movement to safe guards the sentiments of Nyishi Society.

There for my earnest request to those Associations or organizations is to get first hand mandate from the Society with good deeds, instead of being a puppet of somebody.

May Almighty prevail upon them with Wisdom and Honesty.

Yours,

Tana Tara,

Termination not justified

Dear Editor,

It is astonishing to know that the Director of Health services issued termination orders for 12 RFWs from Upper Subansiri district, few from Papum Pare and West Siang districts.  The act of termination seems to be illegal as those RFWs were appointed between 2007 and 2009 on regular basis and were  also enjoying all facilities as regular employees.

If these RFWs were appointed illegally, the officers involved in such illegal appointment should also be brought to the book. Otherwise,   termination of appointees in later stage of service will only encourage a section of officers to go on an appointment spree.

One could imagine very well about the situation and mental agony of those employees if their bread and butter are suddenly snatched way.

Yours,

Tatung Tania

Upper Subansiri

Take a stand

Dear Editor,

This is in reference to the Advocate Taba Tagum incident in which he was brutally attacked and tortured by some miscreants which has created a lifetime of trauma to the victim and severe shock to the law professionals. Such inhuman and barbaric act is a shameful and is a sign of coward, who attack people in group and is also a sign of presence of goons in the peace loving state like Arunachal Pradesh. These kinds of shameful act and goondaism should not be tolerated so that such incidence do not occur again. Such kind of communal virus should be prevented in its very beginning or else there will be a day when the entire state will live in fear because of such goondaism. Beside these I am very sad to know that various NGOs and student organisation are keeping mum. The Nyishi groups and student organisation like the Arunachal Law Student Association should have come forward in such crucial time when the matter is about the law profession and towards defamation of Nyishi community. An advocate is only a middle man licensed by the Bar Council of India who has freedom and right to handle the acceptable cases under Indian legal system and is enrolled in the state list to plead for justice for the clients. Therefore it is my appeal to the entire society and specially miscreants that torturing a lawyer is not a solution.

I appeal to the NGOs, Student Organisations and Arunachalees to come forward and fight against such communal virus before it becomes widespread.

Yours,

Gollo Dani

Thanks for the joy you brought

Dear Editor,

Though I read the news a day late, it was extremely gratifying to hear about Karling Natung and two others achievement at the National sub-junior Boxing championships in Shillong. Other sports are also very popular but while I’ve got nothing to boast about regarding my performance inside the ring, I used to dream of making it good someday. That never happened but Karling Natung’s success gave me just as much pleasure.

Even if the boxing may not be as popular or known in our state as others, hopefully the folks of our state and the sports council does more to encourage the performances by Aguk Juja, Techi Bida and Karling Natung.

Thanks for the joy you three brought for me and may your expertise in the sport soar to the highest.

Yours,

Atung D. Pangya,

Don’t make the situation worse

Dear Editor,

So much of disgusting incidents occurring in state really needs to be controlled. All these bandhs and strikes are no benefit to the future of Arunachalees as it creates panic and hatred in the mind of the people of state towards both the government as well as the student bodies. Nobody really cares about the state and its citizens. If the student body did really care about the issue of Pradeep Thakur then they should have enquired about the matter genuinely. But no, as the history says we will and shall always remain unwilling to learn.

I don’t know how come Arunachalees could just sit and be a mute spectator. I don’t know why the learned personalities and higher ranked government officials are not trying to solve the issue genuinely. This issue also depicts that central government is really not interested in Arunachal Pradesh.

I feel that renowned personalities from all the communities should make themselves involved and bring a fruitful resolution to this never ending issue.

It also gave me a chance to thank Taba Ajum, a well learned and experiential person. He should be supported by all the citizens for his working and if possible his name should be proposed for the Presidency of some effective organisations.

We know that government and student body cannot give a bright future to Arunachal Pradesh but please don’t make the situation more worse.

Yours,

Concerned citizen

Dear Editor,

The article “Campaign against drug peddles/addicts intensify” at Roing by the D.C, Lower Dibang Valley District involving Gram Panchayat Leaders/Members and forming a ‘Anti-Drug Committee’ published in your daily dated 9th Sept is a very encouraging, healthy and need of the moment initiative. Such wonderful initiative deserves appreciation and support from all sections.

I am sure, the IMCLS and AIMSU will also join this noble campaign.
